Bluewater Photo +7 Macro Lens

Bluewater Photo is proud to announce its new 67mm macro diopter. It is one of the top choices on the market for an underwater wet lens for macro photography. 

The Bluewater macro lens is a  high-quality two-element (achromatic) macro lens made of optical glass. It retains its full magnification underwater.  The lens is UV coated and anti-reflective

The Bluewater macro lens is very low profile and has a male thread that is compatible with 67mm ports and adapters.   The opposite side has female threads that can be used to stack two bluewater macro lenses for super macro photography.

This lens allows a photo of a subject less than 1 inch wide to be taken on many compact cameras. It is one of our favorite pieces of underwater photo gear.

What is a diopter?

A diopter is essentially a magnifying glass that can screw onto the outside of you port on your underwater camera housing. It does two things. 

1. It allows you to get closer to the subject you are photographing by reducing the minimum focal distance between your lens and subject

2. It magnifies your subject, allowing you to take macro photos and capture extraordinarily small details in your subjects. 

A diopter is great for macro photography if you use a compact camera or a mid-range kit lens like the Olympus 14-42 mm lens or Sony 16-55mm lens. All you have to do is screw it onto the front of your housing port and you can immediately capture amazing macro photos. This means you can take the diopter on and off underwater and shoot both macro and wide on the same dive! 

The Bluewater +7 can also be used with a macro lens like the Olympus 60mm macro and Sony 90mm macro. A native macro lens gives you more working distance and traditionally better image quality than a diopter. However, when you screw a diopter on top of your macro lens, you can take super-zoomed-in super macro images. You can also stack the Bluewater +7 onto itself for super, super macro photos. Each lens that you stack reduces your working distance and makes it a little harder to find your subject and focus. It also makes your depth of field shallower. However, with a little practice, the results you can get with the Bluewater +7 are spectacular. 

What is a the best diopter magnification?

There is no best magnification level when it comes to diopter - there is only the level you need to take the photo you are trying to capture. For most underwater macro subjects, +7 is all you need. This makes the Bluewater +7 probably the most versatile diopter available when it comes to photographing macro subjects. However, if you know you need to take extreme super macro photos, then you might be better off with more magnification like the Kraken +12 or stack two Bluewater +7's. However, the majority of photographers, especially those new to macro photography, will be satisfied with the Bluewater +7.
